Course Code




The course provides an introduction to Voice over LTE, VoLTE. Users connected to different networks will be able to communicate with each other’s without any consideration to the access technology (2G, 3G, 4G fixed networks etc.). The voce service over LTE must handle handover from /to legacy networks

LTE users connected via eUTRAN will be able to communicate with other users using GERAN, UTRAN and the Mobile Softswitch Solution (MSS). Traffic cases will describe handover and mobility over different access and core technologies.

The voice over LTE course adds value to the operator since it gives insight in how to manage the new technology and stay ahead of the market

  • Describe different interworking cases between 3GPP networks and LTE
  • Give some examples for this interworking e.g. SMS in LTE and CSFB
  • Describe different LTE procedures and give some examples (Connection setup, attach signaling)
  • Explain what is CSFB, SVLTE and VoLGA
  • Describe the relation between OSI and data transmission in LTE
  • Describe how MSC-S will communicate with LTE via IMS
  • Describe the MSS interworking with IMS and the used protocols
  • Mention different traffic cases
  • Describe idle mode interworking and mobility
  • Describe connected mode interworking and mobility
  • Describe CS Interworking
  • Describe PS Interworking
  • Describe a CS call to IMS in detail
  • Describe the introduction of different services and features (e.g. SMS, Fax…)
  • Mention the criteria regarding QoS in LTE


Target audience

The target audience for this course is:

Engineers working with O& M and with R&D and require a good understanding of interworking and interoperability between different mobile networks using different technologies and connected to LTE network.



The participants should have completed the courses LTE basics or have similar knowledge. Knowledge of 3GPP technologies is an advantage
